Spiritual Hospitality

“Spiritual hospitality? What’s that?” We wanted a term with a wider meaning than “outreach”, embracing what Quakers do to ensure that all spiritual seekers feel welcomed and spiritually nurtured among us, whatever their race, nationality, age, class or other aspects of their social identity. Outreach does not end at the meeting house threshold.

As Quakers, we pride ourselves on our openness and our warm welcome to newcomers. Yet often our meetings seem to draw their participants from a fairly limited social and cultural spectrum. The Meeting of Friends in Wales has established the Spiritual Hospitality Project to:

  • explore with Quakers and others the possible reasons for this phenomenon
  • look for existing good practice in Wales and elsewhere
  • clarify the problems which meetings in Wales face in their outreach work
  • find out what more might be done to support local outreach efforts
